Orange Is The New Black star Uzo Aduba has discussed the current state of representation on TV, revealing why she believes there’s a ‘long road to go’.

The 36-year-old actress plays Suzanne ‘Crazy Eyes’ Warren on the hugely popular Netflix series, which has been celebrated for its diverse cast in terms of race, sexuality and gender.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk however on whether representation is improving elsewhere, Uzo believes there’s still a long road ahead on the issue, saying ‘we’ll know it when we see it’.

Uzo said: ‘We’ve seen improvements but I think we still have a long road to go. Because there are a few examples in front of us doesn’t necessarily mean that we’ve done all that is needed to be done.

‘There’s still absences on television in regards to ageism with women, we’re still seeing huge vacancies when it comes to authentic stories in the LGBT, especially as far as leading a project is concerned.

‘We still have much room to fill with regards to people of colour. There’s a large absence of Asians being represented in leading roles or stories in general. African American women still, and females in general.

‘What I know for sure, is we’ll know it when we see it. When we’ve really gotten to the point that we claim to want for ourselves.’

Elsewhere, fellow OITNB’s stars Danielle Brooks and Laverne Cox revealed what season five of the show was like following the death of beloved character Poussey.

You can catch Orange Is The New Black season 5 on Netflix June 9.
